White Elephant is pure, unadulterated chaos. It is the most competitive of holiday traditions, and also the most raucous. It is a hoot to do with friends or family or fun coworkers. It's also a winner of an icebreaker amongst less-fun coworkers. You will walk away from White Elephant with something delightfully unhinged to add to your collection of random shit on the shelf. So, what is White Elephant?
The White Elephant game sees participants each bring a single wrapped gift to a holiday party (virtual or actual). The gifts can range from funny, to sometimes earnest, to shitty-on-purpose. The wrapped gifts are put in a pile, anonymously, so you don't know who brought what. Participants draw numbers, and then participant number one selects a gift from the pile and unwraps it. Each participant afterwards then decides if they're going to steal an already-unwrapped gift from someone else or gamble on opening a still-wrapped gift from the pile. The game continues with mad swapping and stealing of gifts, until everyone has a gift to go home with.
Those are the general rules; it's like Secret Santa, but more villainous. Things get strange. And luckily, you really don't have to overthink what gift you're going to contribute, since it's all weird junk anyway. Even better, cheap is the way to go.
